This playlist chronicles a mushroom trip my best friend and the love of my life, Skye Larue, and I shared this past summer on what became one of the most cleansing and powerful days of both our lives.
1) “Nights” – Frank Ocean
Have you also experienced an increase in the frequency you simply lie there and dissolve into a song this year?
Cause goodness…. I have.
A heighted susceptibly to emotional surrender.. perhaps it’s due to the feeling of having surplus time or of not having anywhere to go, probably both.
Being simultaneously under-stimulated and overwhelmed.. Frank gets it.
3:29 just gets me.
In that sense, this summer day was no different than any other..
Album: “Blonde” (2016)
Label: Boys Don’t Cry
2) “Lockdown” – Anderson .Paak
Let’s set the scene, why don’t we?
It’s late morning. Mid-July.
Skye and I are driving back home to Blue Mounds from Spring Green
Where we just made a delivery of microgreens she and her dad have started cultivating in their basement to supplement their curtailed incomes
to some well-off Chicagoan lawyers who escaped the suffocating lockdown that is city-dwelling in a pandemic and have been camped out in their mansion of a vacation home in the quaint Wisconsin countryside since early spring.
Life’s fucking weird.
Single: “Lockdown” (2020)
Label: Aftermath Entertainment
3) “Water Me Down” – Vagabon
We’re back home in our cabin oasis.
It feels myopic and conceited to mull over personal woes in a year when so much graver pain has been exposed and created.
But then again, being unequivocally faced with your own bullshit is also a theme of this odd journey around the sun.
And maybe if we all took a bit more time to deal with our emotions and ignorance, the world would be a bit better off…
My life is (finally) boiling over.
The relationship with my first love, the foundation of everything I’ve built for years, is unwinding and yet I am mourning the love of someone else.
I am lost and watered-down
And need to wake the fuck up.
Album: “Vagabon” (2019)
Label: Vagabon Music
4) “Freedom Love (feat. Goapele)” – Rexx Life Raj
Skye and I are starting to come up, feeling light and heavy and bubbly and slippery.
Dancing. Bare-chested in every sense of the word.
This song came on.
It’s not my nature to refrain from communication and conflict. To accept that letting someone go is the most loving thing I can do.
But I know I need to and I know that I don’t have a choice regardless.
Lying on the carpet, I watch Skye – the most beautiful dancer I know – serenade herself with movement… so fucking divine.
Tears stream down my face…
She is my favorite human and witnessing that moment made this is my favorite song.
Album: “A Collection of Fleeting Moments and Daydreams” (2020)
Label: orion sun
6) “Oasis” – KlangDruide
I first was introduced to this tune this past spring.
In a hurricane of uncertainty, the sentiment Oasis awoke in me was crystal clear: Hope.
The intensity at 2:48 is so visceral and overwhelming.. and yet the song carries on.
Playing on repeat, it accompanies us to the peak of our trip.
Single: “Oráculos y Oasis” (2019)
Label: Male Cmos
7) “Sekoia” – Fakear
Flying just above the canopy. Feel the sun kiss your eyelids and fingertips.
Dive in. Let go.
Album: “Everything Will Grow Again” (2020)
Label: Theo Le Vigoureux
8) “The Light” – Metronomy
Emerging from the most expansive, therapeutic and tender experience I’ve ever had with psychedelics, I feel this immense sense of optimistic freedom…
Album: “Metronomy Forever” (2019)
Label: Because Music
9) “Wait a Minute!” – WILLOW
“Left my soul in his vision, let’s go get it”….
Feet back on the ground, Skye and I are dancing again.
Liberty is intoxicating.
Album: “ARDIPITHECUS” (2015)
Label: Roc Nation Records
10) “IknowhowIfeel” – Parcels
This song sums up the afterglow of our trip pretty well..
Groovy and empowered.
And besides, it’s always a good idea to wrap up with some funk.
Album: “Parcels” (2018)
Label: Kitsuné Musique
