1) “AUHEJA (Sudan Archives Recurrent)” – Martin Kohlstedt, Sudan Archives

When Sudan Archives is on form she’s very very good. This is Sudan Archives first remix; she chose the German composer’s piece and he was so happy that he threw himself a party and sprained his ankle. It is completely different from the original piano piece and is a song leaving you wanting more with its short length. I hope many more Sudan Archives remixes are on the way.

2) “Hannibal Lecture” – Pan Amsterdam, Jason Williamson, Coup Diablo

Pan Amsterdam is an exquisite taste. Nothing quite like him in the rap scene for me. On this he appears with Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson and the Doves frontman Jimi Goodwin under his new producer pseudonym Coup Diablo. What a team up. Anyway it makes for an interesting collaboration and an album well worth exploring. Jason Williamson and Pan Amsterdam play off each other very well in this track.

3) “I Could Use a Miracle” – Dent May

Lovely pop released as the lead single on Dent May’s latest album “Late Checkout”. After only ever recording in his bedroom and being found by the Animal Collective, he finally set up a studio in LA with two friends. As a result, you can tell this is more refined and large sounding.

4) “Asc. Scorpio” – Oracle Sisters

As the curtains come down on this email, this is the song to see you out. Nice and casual, an easy listen and there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t know how true this is but from the depths of the internet the lead singer supposedly got stung by a scorpion in Jamaica and smuggled it back to Paris, where the trio are based, to write a song about it. Would you believe it?

Pan Amsterdam profile

Stumbling across Pan Amsterdam in 2018, I was surprised and excited at how refreshing his music sounded (start with “Plus One”). I remember struggling to find much about him online at the time, but two years on there is finally more on him. He is an ex Jazz trumpeter from the New York scene called Leron Thomas. He never felt like he fit in, so instead he tried his hand at hip hop and we are all better for it. He was able to come up with a new persona claiming he washed up on the shores of Miami where he happened to find a Trumpet (check his Bandcamp bio) and the rest is history. There are other rumours that he was found by none other than Iggy Pop and following a World Service concert last year he was able to meet Anna Calvi and Jason Williamson (Sleaford Mods). Both feature on his new album “HA Chu”. I think we will be hearing a lot more from Pan Amsterdam in the future.

Stand out tracks: “Plus One”, “Landlord Elijah”, “Hannibal Lecture”

Albums: “The Pocket Watch” (2018, Def Pressé), “HA Chu” (2020, Def Pressé)
